|
 GULLIVER and TATE - nickname ‘Treacle’ - are two ordinary 18 year-olds serving in the British Army in Iraq. Their platoon is struggling to maintain the uneasy peace of 2003. When their popular company captain, GODBER, is killed on patrol by a roadside bomb, morale in the platoon hits rock bottom. Acting on orders they round up several suspects from house-to-house searches. That night feelings at the camp are running high and as the chain of command is weakened and events spiral out of control.
The lads end their tour of duty and return to England full of stories but also shaken by their experiences. Iraq comes back to haunt them when Gulliver’s jilted girlfriend, Shelley, decides to get her own back on him by giving photos of the events in Iraq to the British police. The story hits the press, and Gulliver and Treacle, now the most reviled men in Britain, face court martial. The army claims the two are ‘rotten apples’ acting alone. Guilt-ridden and abandoned, the pressure is too much for a traumatized Treacle. Gulliver, however, is determined to remain loyal to ‘his army’. Only when he is truly alone does he have to decide if he must keep his secrets or explosively have his day in court, and tell the truth about the events of that fateful night. Download:

| Satyricon - Now, Diabolical |
|
Satyricon Return with a Highly Unusual Album that Should Change the Way Black Metal is Percieved. Satyricon do not usually make music that's easy listening. Appreciating its superiority is one thing, trying to understand it is a challenge. Their new album is no exception, and it is their best since their Rebel Extravaganza masterpiece. Odd riffing is present throughout the songs, going from unsettling to rock n roll-ish. Basic song structures do not exist here, for Satyricon composes music in a world of their own. At times it feels like the tracks themselves are a product of continuity, like being one song as a whole divided by spaces. Frost's drumming, which is normally a show-stealer in any Satyricon album, is more basic here. The lack of speed in many tracks keeps him from turning into the 8-armed man that he is. This does not limit his options per se, and he still provides enough substance to support Satyr's riffing. Very good album overall, way better than their Volcano disappointment, decent in presentation given their current direction, but not near as memorable as their early majestic black metal outputs.

Dusk... and Her Embrace was my introduction to Cradle of Filth. After reading rave reviews of the album and reading the lyrics online (this was back in 1997) I decided to pick the album up. At first I wasn't too impressed but the more I listened to it the more I found I loved it. It quickly became my favorite metal album (at that time at least). I had never heard a metal band that had integrated keyboards to the extent that Cradle had and yet managed to to remain... well, metal. The music was as fast, dark and heavy as most death metal bands yet the arrangments were more sophisticated, the atmospheres more intense and the music was gushing with emotion (actual moments of beauty on a metal album-GASP!). Looking back the synths sound a little cheesy but the album is so utterly excellent that this minor short coming is not really noticable. Every track is excellent. "Funeral in Carpathia", "Malice Through the Looking Glass", "Beauty Slept in Sodom" and the title track are all masterpieces. To this day this album ranks in my top ten favorite metal discs. Ignore naysayers who dismiss Cradle because they aren't "true" black metal or because they are "commercial" or because they have a sense of humor, etc. This is a fantastic album.

| In Flames - Lunar Strain |

Despite their respectable place in the world of Scandinavian black metal, In Flames has never been at the front of the pack. Their albums are heavy, ugly affairs that offer plenty of interesting moments, but they never could get the fan base or the respect that peers such as Dimmu Borgir and Emperor have received. Lunar Strain/Subterranean sheds light onto their situation, as it collects their first two albums onto one CD to show the origins of the fivesome. When In Flames is good, they are fantastic, offering a heady mix of classical themes and traditional melodies presented through a filter of acidic black metal. This is best reflected toward the end of Lunar Strain, where both versions of "Everlost," "Hargalaten," and "In Flames" are very interesting and well-crafted variations on their chosen genre. Falsetto vocals, acoustic guitars, string sections, low keyboards, and wonderfully mournful melodies are the glue that keeps these tracks from being bland death metal screechers. But when In Flames is average, they are notably average. The first half of Lunar Strain is filled with dated, harmless riffing that does nothing that any other faceless black metal group wouldn't attempt.
